Buffalo Love
For this project I wanted to incorporate the natural feel of cotton against the geometric, sharp building lines/maps of the city of Buffalo. I really liked that the maps I found were a nice clash against the soft look of the white cotton. There was something very odd about pairing the two together. I believe that opposites attract, and there is something magical when combined. The end product that I envision coming out of this is going to soft and comfortable. I decided to go with a home goods/ comfortable lounge clothing you can find in your home and wear around the house. I would like this collection represent the feel of the city life and the people who live in it. The oranges represent the beautiful sunsets we get here in Buffalo. The greens and blues represent a sense of urbanization, sophistication, modern culture as well as an artistic city and the people who appreciate it for what it's worth.
Runway
My initial idea for this project was to fuse two cultures into one in a tasteful and creative manner. I wanted to create a mix of African as well as Indian art and develop a collection that would represent both. I chose these two cultures because they each had a different feel and character. I was mainly inspired by the bright colors of African prints as well as their animal art. I chose Indian art because it brought some geometry and shapes into the picture. I thought the two looked really interesting when combined and I enjoyed the look of them two collectively. In my series, I wanted the viewer to see both cultures upon observing the prints. I wanted to make sure that the natural feel of the African art would shine through by the use of natural shapes and animal aspects weaved in the designs. I believe that the two cultures complimented each other in more ways than one. Although they were different at times, you could see their similarities and that’s what appealed to me. The end product that I envision coming out of this project is going to be a light weight type of dress clothing made out of cotton, linen, silk and polyester, It’s going to be feminine yet edgy at the same time as it combines the two cultures into one.
