Buffalo Loves Cotton - Spring 2011

For the Buffalo Loves Cotton project, I was inspired by my two favorite places in Buffalo, Delaware Park and the Burchfield-Penney Art Center. My concept, called Cotton Parkway, incorporates a vintage park scene that is updated with bright colors and rough sketches. I kept colors bright and vibrant, using main colors such as “Cotton Candy Pink,” “Pool” blue-green, and “Sunshine” yellow-orange. As accents and backgrounds, I kept colors light, airy and natural to show the mixture of a spring or summer day in the midst of an urban city. My inspiration for the motifs and prints came from the nature scenes of Burchfield's paintings. His paintings are abstracted works of art using the same color schemes, bright vivacious colors with some darks and some lights. I used motifs such as the butterflies from the “A Dream of Butterflies” painting, cotton dandelions from “Dandelion Seed Heads and the Moon” and created other motifs throughout my prints using the same abstract rougher style of his painting. I thought the brightness in color would contrast nicely as a rough abstract print to show the contrast of the city of Buffalo in comparison to the light and airy parks of Buffalo, which is where my second inspiration of Delaware Park comes from. It is by far my favorite place in Buffalo NY, and I created my prints and style imagining Delaware Park as an older carnival scene. I used motifs of cotton candy, bubbles and flowers as motifs to show a simpler beauty of nature of Buffalo. I tried to incorporate both of these places into the board and prints, while keeping the idea fresh as the park scene itself.

Runway 4.0 - Sunstorm Collection

Created for Buffalo State's Runway 4.0 Fashion Show. Sunstorm is a collection for Spring/Summer 2011. The direction for Runway 4.0’s fashion show in Fashion Diversity Mash is Fantasical Reality. I was inspired by a storm I watched that was a dark blue-gray, that had clouds that were bright yellow and orange that lit a dark sky like fire. I am pulling aspects from Egyptian queens and Cleopatra and mashing that concept with the fantasy of fairies and female warriors. The colors are kept earthy, using neutrals such as white (Lightning) and Midnight Black, warm colors of Sepia, sienna orange, and sandy tans, and colors of the skies like lapis and blue cloud. My inspiration for the prints mixed the shimmering jewelry style of Egyptian queens, fairies, and rough skeches of suns and clouds. The materials used are flowing silks and chiffons, as well as georgette, and a soft cotton jersey. Long strapless gowns worn by queens are updated with sexy fairy-like aspects such as swarovski crystals, metallic beadwork and pyramid studs.
